Robotech Defenders are a line of Scale Model kits created by Revell during the 1980's. The line of Kits was suppose to coincide with a Robotech Defenders Comic series. DC Comics had agreed to a three part mini series to test the waters. The comic was so bad, that it only ran for two issues. The model kits, however were a great success. From the Robotech FAQ: Model kit company Revell was also looking in Japan for models for their Robotech Defenders line of robotic model kits. They eventually used models from MACROSS, DOUGRAM , and ORGUSS. It is my understanding that a lot of the kits showed up in the Battletech Role Play games. I remember owning 12 large posters (3' x 2.5') that were suppose to be Battletech blue prints. Some of the kits were featured in those posters, though I cannot remember which.
Recently I have been able to find a lot of the kits, usually in either factory sealed, or open but never built. The one page "catalog" that comes with the kits, apparently did not include the tail enders, which I have found as well. Below are table of almost all of the kits including a most of the tail enders I have found. Tail enders are the last pieces of a line, often they are not documented in the offical packaging that comes with the other kits. In this case the Robotech Defenders catalog only lists the first wave, so no one that I have spoken to knows how many tail enders are floating around.
The comic, a two issue series, was published by DC Comics. It was originally intended to be a three issue series, but was reduced to the first normal issue and a 32 page, no advertisment second issue. It basically cronicals the battles of a team of pilots who fight a small savage race of aliens who have been given superior technology. The pilots are loosing the war when the leader accidently activates one of the robots. She then learns of the existance of the other Robots on each of the other pilots home planets, and sends them to recover them. By the end of the first issue, they have all the robots and counterattack the bad guys. Eventually they still end up getting their tails kicked, and they get captured (and one pilot gets killed). They escape by pushing a big red button which releases the Robot's minds, allowing them to escape. Evenutally the go after another bad guy who was in control of the savage aliens. They win by causing the evil alien energy siphon to suck the energy from the sun, causing the evil alien's space ship to explode. After reading the comics, it is no wonder they only held on for two issues. However, if you are really into the Robotech Defenders, you can get them at almost any comic book store for less then a $1.00 a piece.
I recently found a Robotech Power Changer toy. It is not a model kit, but a remote control car/robot.
I have links to close ups of some of the kits. Some of these close ups are HUGE, so be ready for a wait if you want to see them. I plan to replace most of these pictures as I build the kits.

![]() 1148 - 1/72 Aquato |
|
|
Aquato looks to be a underwater mech. A note of interest, in the close-up, you can see the red "air tanks" on his back. They are upside down in the picture! Also the box says the "helmet" can be positioned in two positions (and shows them), but the instructions do not explain how to do this. He is also one of two kits that are suppose to be in a different scale. |
Ziyon is a standard humanoid mech with a missile launcher on one shoulder. Zion appears to be a snow-terrain mech. He is the only other 1/72 scale kit |
Thoren comes with a gun and a missile kit. My guess would be that he is suppose to be a mountain terrain mech. |

I built this kit in the 80's and still have it. It has a removable back pack with a large cannon on it. I would guess that this is a space or Ariel mech. |
Condar appears to be a desert mech. He has a battery of missile on either side of the cockpit and a large shield on one shoulder. Make sure to take a look at me build up page for this kit. |
Talos is one of the few RD kits that I do not own. From what I can tell, he is a jungle mech. | Gartan is another kit that I do not have yet, but he reappears in the Strike Force Set. |

| Well I finally got a hold of this kit. It is very cool, completely different then what I expect from the Robotech Defender kits. The Robotech Defender robot kits are usually a little more rounded and a bit thicker in the legs. It also has missle platforms over the shouldars on what looked to be wings. Over all, this is a pretty cool kit. | This kit reminds me of a 'Mech from one of my favorite comics, Gray Death. A very interesting kit that also does not fall in the "normal" range of Robotech Defender kits, it almost has no humanoid shape whatsever. Check out this page for more information and pictures of this kit, including my own build up comments. | This is another kit that took me by suprise. The SDF-1 is one of the most recognizable robots on the market. It plays a huge role in the Robotech Macross series. I finally got this kit as well. It is very animated for a kit of a ship this size. The large booms swing forward, forming the "reflex" laser from the original Robotech Macross series. The arms move and are designed to look like two aircraft carriers. The legs also have limited movement. This kit does not change into the SDF-1 Cruiser mode, but I have found that Revell did release another kit of the SDF-1 in Cruiser mode. | This is the SDF-1 in what I call "Cruiser Mode", Revell called it the "Space Fortress SDF1". Either way it is the same Mech as the Attack Fortress, just in it's "mobile" mode. I have been told that this kit is pretty long, and even though the scales are different on the boxes, they appear to be the same in the actual kit. | |

Sand Stalker 1187 - 1/72 | |||

| The Dromedian looks very similar to the Mech in the Commando set. It is a four legged tank, basically. The Commando version comes with platfroms on either side from which to attack from. | I could not decide where the Sand Stalker really fits, was it a normal Defender, or a Set? I eventually decided it was a Normal Defender, because it lacked any auxilary vehicles. The kit is very nice, basically a six legged tank. It comes with two figure, one a driver and the other a sniper. The turret rotates and the legs move. I have this kit, and I have run into a problem. The factory sealed kit did not come with the "vinyl tree". This is the tree that has the vinyl caps that most of these kits come with. This would normally not be a problem, since I have tons of these caps. However this kit uses specail vinyl pieces for the legs. If anyone has anything that looks like what is in this picture, please let me know! | |||

Robotech Defender Vehicles |
|
| Ice Rover 1161 - 1/72 & 1/48 |
Terra Tracker 1162 - 1/48 |
![]() |
|
| The Ice Rover is actually 2 vehicles in one kit! The kit contains a 1/48 and a 1/72 version of the Ice Rover. Basically the Ice Rover is a hovercraft with a top mounted gun and side missle launchers. The 1/48 version has interchangable guns. The 1/72 version will work great in a diorama with Ziyon. | The Terra Tracker is a six-wheeled jeep like vehicle. It has missle launchers on either side and a gun along the top. It also comes with three figures. This piece would be a great addition to the Armored Combat Team set. |
Robotech Defender Changers |
| Trigon 1/48 - 1405 |
![]() |
| The last of the Robotech Defender Changers, this kit was released in 1985. It only has two forms, one is a rolling tank, the other is a three legged walker. This is a very cool kit, and pretty complex. The "fingers" on each of the arms are movable, and the "arms" have several points of articulation. The cannon on the top is also very impressive. |
Robotech Defender Changers |
|
| These kits were a complete shock to me. One is a 1/100 scale Vexar with the fullbattle armor (boosters, arm missile launchers, leg protectors). This is commonly seen in the Robotech Macross toys and the Transformer Jet Fire. What came as a shock was the name, "VF-1S Battloid". The designation VF-1S is common to the Harmony Gold Robotech series. The other does not look like any of the other Changers, but does resemble the Harmony Gold Robotech VF-1A. The model number (1407) would seem to indicate that their are few other kits between this one and Axoid. | |

Search Patrol |

| The Tactical Unit kit contains two models, one is a Gerwalk veritech. The other is a Veritech in Battloid mode. Neiter one is transformable. These were a good value when they first came out, but they are pretty common now adays. | The Search Patrol kit contains two models as well, one being the Gerwalk Veritech. The other is an Armored Battloid. Kind of an odd combination for a "Search Patrol" since the Armored Battloid (as a real 'Mech) is slower then a normal Veritech, non-transformable (unless it blows its armour) and more heavily weaponed. I guess it is a "Search and Destroy" Patrol! |

1404 - 1/100 |
| At 1/100, this kit is still HUGE. The box alone is a good four feet long! It comes with a Tomahawk and an Armored Battloid, "cherry picker" crains, working overhead crains, utility vehicles , work crews and equipment. A great display piece, any 1/100 scale Mech could fit into the diorama. Get two or more and hook them together for a huge factory! |
Robotech Defenders Factory Tailenders |
![]() |
1411 through 1414 (?) - 1/170 |
| These kits were another suprise. Mostly because they were re-released by another Japanese company recently. If you can find either one, they are a great set of kits. Their are four, as shown above. What is cool about them is you can link and stack them to make a huge factory. Unless you just have to have the RD versions, the new releases are identical. You can usually order them from a Japanese web site like Hobby Link Japan. I do not recommend ordering them off E-Bay, as they can usually be cheaper if you get them straight from the source. |
